Scholarship Requirements & Documentation
The NFB of California annually awards several scholarships to qualified blind students pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies in order to achieve an academic degree. This opportunity is also available to high school seniors preparing to enter undergraduate programs.
This year, scholarships include the Julie Landucci Scholarship, Lawrence “Muzzy” Marcelino Memorial Scholarship, Gerald Drake Memorial Scholarship, LaVyrl “Pinky” Johnson Memorial Scholarship. Scholarship amounts vary from two to five thousand dollars. This application covers all of these awards.
Eligibility requirements are:
- The applicant must be legally blind (include documentation).
- The applicant must be a full-time student in the Fall of 2009 with an average G.P.A. of not less than 3.0.
- The winner shall attend the NFB of California State Convention in Newark, October 22-25. Hotel expenses will be paid.
- Completed applications and all required documentation must be received by August 31st, 2009 to be considered. Required documents are proof of blindness and academic transcripts. Graduating high school seniors should submit a high school transcript. Undergraduate college students, having completed fewer than 30 college units, should submit a high school transcript plus one for all completed college work. Other college students should submit transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work.
- Three letters of recommendation must be included. Of these three letters, one must be from a former teacher.
Completed documentation and transcripts must be postmarked no later than Monday, August 31st, 2009. Finalists will be notified by phone prior to September 15th, 2009. All other applicants will be notified by letter or e-mail.
Respond to the following four questions in no more than 500 words on a separate sheet of paper and mail it to the State Office with the rest of your documentation. (ALL RESPONSES MUST BE TYPED):
- What educational and career goals do you wish to achieve with the assistance of this scholarship?
- Explain your involvement in the blindness community.
- Describe the alternative techniques you use to do your schoolwork (e.g. Braille, large print, recording, adapted computer).
- In order to be considered for certain scholarships please indicate if you are currently receiving Rehabilitation services.
